Hi lovebirds! If you're dreaming of engagement photos with towering peaks, alpine lakes, and fresh mountain air, a Kananaskis session might be perfect for you.
I'm based in Calgary, and I love heading west to photograph couples in Kananaskis and the Rocky Mountain foothills. Here's everything you need to know to plan a mountain session that feels relaxed, adventurous, and completely you.
Why Couples Love a Mountain Session
There's something about the mountains that brings people closer. The scenery is breathtaking, but it's the feeling that makes these sessions special.
Out there, it's just the two of you, the wind, and the view. Couples tend to relax, laugh more, and forget about the camera. That's when the most real and meaningful photos happen.
A mountain session also tells a story. Many of my couples love the outdoors, and these photos capture the adventures that brought them together.
Where I Photograph
I serve Calgary and travel to Kananaskis and the Rocky Mountain foothills for engagement sessions. Kananaskis is close enough for an easy evening drive, yet it feels a world away.
From lakeshores to forest trails to open meadows, there are so many beautiful spots to choose from. When you book, we'll chat about the look you want and find a location that fits your style and comfort level.
The Best Seasons for a Kananaskis Session
Every season in the mountains has its own charm:
Summer: Warm evenings, green trees, and bright blue lakes. It's the most popular time, so book early.
Fall: Golden larches, crisp air, and cozy layers. Fall colours in the Rockies are stunning.
Winter: Snowy peaks and a quiet, magical feel. Perfect for cuddly photos in warm coats.
Spring: Fresh and peaceful, though some trails may still be snowy or muddy.
Why Golden Hour Matters
I plan most mountain sessions around golden hour, the hour or so before sunset. The light is soft and warm, and it glows beautifully on the peaks.
In summer, golden hour can be quite late in the evening. In winter, it comes much earlier. I'll help you pick the perfect start time for your date so we catch the best light.
Sunrise sessions are another lovely option. They're quieter, and the morning light can be just as dreamy.
What to Wear
Mountain settings call for outfits that look beautiful and still let you move comfortably.
Choose earthy or soft tones. Cream, sage, rust, and dusty blue all stand out nicely against the mountains.
Add movement. Flowy dresses and skirts look amazing in the mountain breeze.
Layer up. Sweaters, jackets, and scarves keep you warm and add texture.
Coordinate, don't match. Aim for colours that complement each other.
What to Bring
A little preparation goes a long way. Here's what I recommend packing:
Comfy shoes for hiking. Wear them to walk to our spot, then switch into nicer shoes for photos if you like.
Warm layers. It can get chilly fast once the sun dips behind the peaks.
A cozy blanket. Great for sitting on and for snuggly photos.
Water and snacks. Fresh air makes everyone hungry.
Bug spray and sunscreen in the warmer months.
Your Kananaskis Conservation Pass. Visitors need a Kananaskis Conservation Pass for their vehicle when parking in the area.
Planning Around Mountain Weather
Mountain weather is famous for changing quickly. A sunny afternoon can turn cloudy, windy, or rainy in no time.
Here's how we plan for it:
We'll check the forecast together in the days before your session.
We'll keep a backup date in mind, just in case.
Bring an extra layer and a clear umbrella for light rain.
Stay flexible. Some of my favourite photos have happened with moody clouds and misty peaks!
Your safety and comfort always come first. If conditions aren't right, we'll reschedule for a better day.
Tell Me What Inspires You
Every couple has their own story, and I want your photos to feel like yours.
Before your session, let me know what your inspiration is and what matters most to you. Maybe it's a favourite trail, the way you two laugh together, or a feeling you want to remember from this season of life.
Whatever it is, share it with me. I'll make sure your photos express it.
