Best Fall Photo Spots in Calgary

Couple embracing at golden hour with evergreen trees and mountains behind them

When the leaves start to turn, I get so excited for fall sessions. Calgary has so many beautiful places to capture the season, from river valleys to wide-open parks.

Here are some of my favourite fall photo spots, plus a few tips to help you choose the right one.

1. Fish Creek Provincial Park

Fish Creek is a fall favourite. The trails along the creek glow with golden trees, and the open meadows are full of warm, tall grasses.

Great for: Families, couples, and anyone who loves a natural, outdoorsy feel.

Tip: Golden hour here makes the trees look like they're lit from within.

2. Prince's Island Park

This downtown park is lovely in fall, with colourful trees along the Bow River and pathways covered in leaves.

Great for: Grads, couples, and families who want a mix of nature and city.

Tip: Weekday evenings are usually quieter than weekends.

3. Nose Hill Park

Nose Hill turns into a sea of golden prairie grass in fall. The big sky and city views in the distance make it feel open and free.

Great for: Couples and portraits with a relaxed, airy vibe.

Tip: It can be breezy up top, so bring a layer and embrace a little wind in your hair.

4. Reader Rock Garden

Stone paths, old trees, and late-season blooms give Reader Rock Garden a timeless, storybook look in the fall.

Great for: Portraits and couples who love a romantic, classic feel.

Tip: Rich colours like burgundy, cream, and deep green look beautiful here.

5. Edworthy Park and the Bow River Pathways

The river pathways offer golden trees, water views, and plenty of room to walk and explore.

Great for: Families with little ones who like to move around.

Tip: Walking sessions help kids relax and give us lots of natural, candid moments.

6. Kananaskis and the Foothills

If you're willing to drive a little, the mountains in fall are breathtaking. Golden larches, snowy peaks, and crisp air make for unforgettable photos.

Great for: Engagements and adventurous couples.

Tip: Mountain weather changes quickly in fall, so we'll plan a backup date.

How to Choose Your Spot

When picking a location, think about:

  • Your style. Do you love wild and natural, or classic and polished?

  • Your family. Little ones do best with short walks and open space.

  • Your outfits. Earthy tones suit parks and prairies. Richer colours pop in gardens.

  • Travel time. A closer location means more energy for the session itself.

Not sure which one fits you best? That's what I'm here for. We'll chat about what you're hoping for and I'll suggest a spot.

Timing Matters in Fall

Fall colour in Calgary doesn't last long. Peak colour usually comes and goes within a few weeks, and one windy day can change everything.

I recommend booking early and staying a little flexible with your date so we can catch the trees at their best.

What to Wear for Fall Photos

Fall locations look best with warm, earthy outfits that complement the season.

  • Colours: Cream, rust, mustard, olive, burgundy, and camel.

  • Textures: Chunky knits, corduroy, flannel, and suede.

  • Layers: Cardigans, jackets, and scarves for chilly evenings.

  • Shoes: Comfortable boots that can handle trails and leaves.

Avoid bright neon and big logos, which can distract from the natural colours around you. Aim to coordinate rather than match, and choose outfits that make you feel comfortable and confident.
