Why Fall Is the Perfect Season for Family Photos in Calgary

Fall might be my favourite season to photograph families in Calgary. The light is softer, the trees turn gold, and there's a cozy feeling in the air that shows up in every photo.

If you've been thinking about family photos, here's why fall is such a wonderful time to book, and how to make the most of it.

The Light Is Softer and Warmer

In summer, golden hour can come late in the evening, which is tricky with little ones. In fall, the sun sets earlier, so we can catch that warm, glowy light at a time that works better for bedtime.

The light also sits lower in the sky, which means softer shadows and a gentle warmth on everyone's skin.

The Colours Do Half the Work

Golden aspens, rusty grasses, and deep evergreens make a beautiful natural backdrop. Your photos feel rich and warm without needing anything extra.

Calgary's fall colours can change quickly, so it's a good idea to book early in the season. A strong wind can take the leaves down in a day or two.

Cozy Outfits Look Amazing

Fall is the season of knits, flannels, corduroy, and soft scarves. These textures look beautiful on camera and make your photos feel warm and inviting.

Some colours I love for fall family sessions:

  • Cream and oatmeal

  • Rust, burgundy, and mustard

  • Olive and sage green

  • Warm browns and camel

  • Soft denim

Pick three or four of these and mix them across the family. Coordinate rather than match, and your photos will feel natural and connected.

Perfect Timing for Holiday Cards

A fall session gives you plenty of time to choose your favourite images for holiday cards, gifts, and prints for the grandparents.

If holiday cards are part of your plan, I recommend booking by early fall. That leaves time for editing, choosing your photos, and ordering before the busy season.

Tips for a Happy Fall Session

  • Dress in layers. Calgary fall evenings can turn chilly fast. Bring jackets or sweaters you don't mind being in photos.

  • Keep little hands warm. Pack mittens and a warm hat for between shots.

  • Bring a blanket. It's perfect for sitting in the leaves and for cuddling up.

  • Pack snacks. Hungry kids and happy photos don't mix well.

  • Have fun with the leaves. Tossing leaves makes for some of the most joyful, candid moments.

What If the Weather Changes?

Alberta weather keeps us on our toes, and an early snowfall isn't unusual. I keep an eye on the forecast and we'll stay in touch the week of your session.

If it's too cold, windy, or wet, we'll simply move to another evening. And honestly, a light dusting of snow on fall leaves can be magical.

What a Fall Family Session Looks Like

Most of my fall family sessions last about an hour. We'll start with a few relaxed group photos while everyone is fresh, then move into play, walks, and snuggles.

I'll give you simple prompts, like walking hand in hand, whispering a secret, or swinging the little ones between you. These moments feel natural and create photos full of connection.

Toward the end, we'll catch the best of golden hour. That's when the trees glow and the light turns soft and warm. It's often when the sweetest photos happen, because everyone has relaxed and is simply enjoying being together.

Afterward, you'll have a gallery full of memories from this season, ready for prints, gifts, and holiday cards.
