How to Prepare Your Kids for Family Photos

If you're a parent, you might be a little nervous about family photos. Will the kids cooperate? Will someone melt down? Will anyone actually smile?

Here's the good news: kids don't need to be perfect for your photos to be beautiful. With a little preparation, your session can be relaxed and fun for everyone.

Talk About It Ahead of Time

Kids do better when they know what to expect. A few days before, tell them where you're going, who they'll meet, and what you'll be doing.

Keep it light and exciting. Try something like, "We're going to the park to play and a friend is going to take pictures of our family."

Avoid making it sound like a big, serious event. The less pressure they feel, the more naturally they'll act.

Plan Around Naps and Meals

Timing makes a huge difference. A well-rested, well-fed child is much happier in front of the camera.

  • Try to schedule the session after a nap, not right before one.

  • Feed everyone a snack before we start.

  • Bring extra snacks that won't stain clothes or faces.

If golden hour lands close to bedtime, we'll talk about the best time for your family. Happy kids matter more than perfect light.

Dress Them for Comfort

Kids who are itchy, cold, or pinched won't be happy for long. Choose soft, comfortable clothes that let them move and play.

Have them try on their outfit a few days before so there are no surprises. And pack a backup outfit, just in case.

Skip the "Say Cheese"

Forced smiles rarely look natural. Instead of asking kids to smile, I like to get them laughing through games, silly questions, and play.

You can help by staying relaxed and playful too. When parents are having fun, kids usually join in.

Bring a Little Motivation

A small reward can work wonders. Some ideas:

  • A special treat after the session

  • A trip to the playground afterward

  • A favourite toy or stuffy to bring along

Keep bribes out of sight until the end, so they stay exciting.

Let Them Be Themselves

Some of my favourite family photos happen in the in-between moments: a toddler running through the grass, a big hug, or a giggle when someone gets tickled.

If your child isn't in the mood for posing, that's completely okay. I'll follow their lead and capture who they really are right now.

What Parents Can Do During the Session

  • Stay calm. Kids pick up on stress quickly.

  • Let me do the directing. Kids often listen better to someone new.

  • Focus on connection. Snuggle, play, and enjoy each other.

  • Don't worry about the meltdowns. They happen, and we'll work through them together.

Every Age Is Different

Babies do best when they're fed, warm, and rested.

Toddlers love to move, so we'll keep things active and playful.

Big kids enjoy being given a job, like helping pick a spot or leading a walk.

Teens appreciate a relaxed approach and a little humour.

A Quick Pre-Session Checklist for Parents

  • Pack snacks, water, and wipes
