Winter Photo Sessions in Calgary: How to Stay Cozy

Many people put photos on hold once winter arrives in Calgary. But some of my favourite sessions happen in the snow.

Soft light, sparkling snow, and cozy layers can make winter photos feel magical. Here's how to plan a winter session that's beautiful and comfortable.

Why Winter Sessions Are Special

Snow acts like a giant reflector, brightening faces and creating a clean, soft look. Everything feels calm and quiet.

Winter sessions also have a cozy, snuggly feel. Couples cuddle closer, kids play in the snow, and everyone looks adorable with rosy cheeks.

Timing Is Everything

Winter days in Calgary are short, and the sun sets early. Most winter sessions happen in the afternoon, when the light is warm and low.

Sessions are usually a little shorter in winter too, so everyone stays warm and happy.

Watch the Temperature

Chinooks can bring surprisingly mild days, while cold snaps can be too frigid to be outside for long.

We'll keep a close eye on the forecast and choose a day that feels comfortable. If it's too cold, we'll reschedule. Your safety and comfort come first, especially for little ones.

What to Wear for Winter Photos

Winter outfits can be both warm and beautiful.

  • Coats: Wool coats or puffers in neutral colours like camel, cream, grey, or deep green.

  • Knits: Chunky sweaters, scarves, and toques add texture and warmth.

  • Colour: Rich colours like burgundy, forest green, and mustard pop against white snow.

  • Boots: Warm, waterproof boots. We can hide them in some shots if you like.

  • Mittens: Keep hands warm between photos.

Avoid wearing all white, which can blend into the snow. Neon and big logos also stand out too much.

Layer Smart

The secret to a great winter session is layers you can't see.

  • Thermal base layers under clothes

  • Warm socks and insoles

  • Hand and foot warmers

  • A warm jacket to wear between shots

Keeping cozy helps you relax, and it shows in your photos.

Fun Ideas for Snowy Sessions

  • Toss snow into the air

  • Build a little snowman

  • Go sledding with the kids

  • Share a thermos of hot chocolate

  • Snuggle under a plaid blanket

These activities create real smiles and natural moments.

Winter Location Ideas

Snowy parks, evergreen trees, and frozen river pathways all look beautiful in winter. For couples, a trip to Kananaskis offers stunning snowy mountain views.

We'll choose a spot that's easy to reach and has cleared paths, so getting there is safe and simple.

Bring Along

  • Extra mittens and socks

  • A warm drink

  • A blanket

  • Snacks for the kids

  • A towel for wet boots

Tips for Kids in the Cold

Little ones get cold faster than adults, so a few extra steps help keep them happy.

  • Keep their jackets on until the last moment.

  • Warm up in the car between locations.

  • Pack a favourite warm drink or snack.

  • Let them play in the snow. Happy kids make the best photos.

If anyone gets too chilly, we'll take a break. A short, happy winter session is always better than a long, cold one.

Protecting Your Photos from Winter Glare

Bright snow can make people squint. I'll position you so the light is soft on your faces and the snow glows behind you. If it's very sunny, we'll look for shade from trees or plan the session for later in the afternoon.

Let's Embrace the Snow

Winter doesn't have to mean waiting for spring. A snowy session can give you some of the most magical photos of the year.
